STRAIN PROFILE Gelato Feminized
Generally, there are commonalities when it comes to fragrance. Gelato, though, sets itself apart from the thousands of hybrids that have found its way into the market. After having gone through multiple generations, the most stabilized phenotype, #33, emerged and it showcases a distinctively appealing scent as well as having excellent growth traits. Its being the 33rd is also the reason why some people referred to it as Larry Bird.
Gelato shares a deep connection with Girl Scout Cookies (GSC) and has the genes of classics OG Kush, Cherry Pie, and Durban Poison. Its parent strains are:
Sunset Sherbert. A highly-intoxicating cross between GSC and Pink Panties. It has a complex terpene profile that blends a citrusy and skunky note with the smell of berry with a candy-like quality.
Thin Mint Cookies. A phenotype of GSC that boasts of striking blue and purple colors amidst a thick coat of resins. It has a minty fragrance hence the name.
Both these parent strains are remarkable in delivering heavy-hitting body stone after the initial euphoric surge. These same effects are evident with Gelato as well, most especially when cultivated from feminized seeds provided by United Strains of America. Under the right conditions, these seeds have a high success rate of germinating timely and growing to the plants' full potential.
Growing Gelato from Feminized
Previously, Gelato is one of the remarkable strains that is not available for home cultivation. It is unlikely even to obtain cuttings. Even so, it is also a finicky plant that requires more than the usual time and knowledge in gardening techniques. In this regard, United Strains of America did well in not only making it possible to grow at home but also offer female seeds produced from highly stable mothers.
Growing Gelato begins with deciding on the medium, among others. Old-timers do swear by the use of organic soil as it seems to bring out the best in the terpene profile. In other words, plants will be more aromatic. Nonetheless, the difference between the fragrance and flavors is not significant enough to disregard hydro. Feeding nutrients to the plants directly set it up for explosive growth when provided with 600 watts of LED/HPS.
It is adaptable to the Sea of Green (SOG) method too. Gelato can withstand both LST and HST. Keeping the height short is not a problem at all, and having several plants under SOG ensures that the yield remains high.
One thing that should improve the appearance is to expose it to lower temperature during the dark cycle before the flowering period starts. Doing so stimulates the anthocyanin pigments, and that brings out the stunning purple colors. Also, as the flowers mature, its scent becomes pungent. Installing an odor-control filter helps eliminate the smell from flooding the house or escaping into the neighborhood.
After switching to 12/12 light cycle, it takes 8 to 9 weeks for the buds to develop fully. Its yield should be in the vicinity of 500 to 600 grams per square meter.
Gelato also thrives outdoors and prefers a warm and humid environment. It usually is ready for harvest after halfway through October. Each plant can produce a generous 600 grams of buds.
Fragrance and Flavor
Of Gelato being the descendant of two strains with incredible flavors is not an accident but a matter of choice. Thus, as expected, it would boast of the exotic tastes of Sunset Sherbert and Thin Mint GSC.
Amidst the earthy odor, a complex blend that includes mint, citrus, berry, sherbert, orange, lavender, and cookie comes together to exude a scent and taste that is unlike any others - and it is incredibly delightful to the palate. Moreover, it also leaves a somewhat sweet and piney aftertaste.
Having fun and a nostalgia-invoking name does seem to suggest that this strain gentle. Underneath it though is a monster packing as much as 25% THC. One little bit is more than enough for a satisfying hit, and it is quite easy to exceed personal limitations. For this reason, it is best consumed by veterans while beginners are better off starting with another strain.
Even in a moderate dose, Gelato rushes in fast to deliver a euphoric buzz that quickly turns the mood upbeat. It clears the head and promotes an influx of thoughts and ideas. During this early stage, the mental stimulation is one the have consumers feeling happy and motivated. As much as some people might think that it makes for a sweet wake-and-bake strain to kickstart the day, though, that may not be an excellent idea.
Complementing the cerebral high, the other side of the strain creeps into the body. It starts as a soothing sensation spreading throughout the body and in doing so, puts muscles in relaxation. Tensions leave as heaviness weighs down the extremities. At the very least, it leads to laziness hence the slowdown in physical activities.
The Gelato experience could be quite intense as well. For some people, this means experiencing a buzzing head high often characterized by distortions in visuals and sounds. The sense of happiness responsible for making one feel cheerful and even sociable could also turn into quiet introspection especially when the physical effects overwhelm the body and induce a heavy couch-lock.
Regardless, consuming Gelato can cause red and dry eyes, cottonmouth, dizziness. It might also induce a headache. Granted that these are typical reactions to the use of cannabis, mainly in high dosage, there are adverse effects that could also occur. For example, it could make some people feel anxious or paranoid.
A logical assumption when looking at its cannabinoid profile is that it has excellent recreational benefits. That may be so, but there are far more compelling reasons for its existence. Coming from a lineage that includes Durban Poison - one of the best medical strains of all time, Gelato indeed has those same potentials for therapeutic use.
Once the cannabinoids bind with the receptors in the brain to induce a euphoric buzz, different medical properties come into play. Stress melts away as it uplifts the mood. Several studies also appear to support the presence of anxiolytic properties and efficacy in reducing symptoms of anxiety. Furthermore, other constituents have antidepressant and antipsychotic properties.
Although THC is psychoactive, and Gelato does possess a high level, it is also a natural painkiller. In territories and states where medical cannabis is legal, many have used it as an alternative to opioids - which causes addiction and poses potentially life-threatening risks.
One thing to also expect under the influence of Gelato is the craving for food. Its ability to stimulate the appetite has a wide range of use from managing eating disorders to counteracting the appetite-suppressing effects of chemotherapy. Incidentally, another reaction to such aggressive treatments is feeling nauseous, and this strain can contain that.
Gelato Feminized Seeds
Gelato is a product of absolute dedication and commitment to excellence. Like other premium quality strains, it took years to develop. Phenotype #33 for sure took its sweet time before emerging. Now that it has done so, the original remained out of the reaches of home cultivators.
The work involved in developing mother plants that could produce female seeds was painstaking. Nonetheless, stabilized mothers that have all the best qualities defining the greatness of Gelato did come out, and so Gelato made its way to the catalog of United Strains of America.
